It’s that time of year again. No, we’re not talking about the Iowa caucuses, we’re speaking of the fabulous Golden Greta Awards. As our returning guests know this is the year’s most-anticipated award show. For 2015, we’re hosting the show from our new sparkly venue, the Braselton Waffle House and Dinner Theater.
Now, for some important housekeeping items. 2015 started with great concern when the EuropeanMarket email system went wobbly for several days. Imagine our surprise when we discovered our server was housed in the employee restroom of the Red Roof Inn in Pueblo, Colorado. Who knew? Wink!
Then, the Golden Gretas were rocked by scandal. Our initial choice for hosting duties, Mr. Brian Williams, became entangled in controversy. We were shocked as the rest of you when it was revealed he didn’t actually sing a duet with Adele. So, we turned to our backup hosts—Bindi Irwin and Donald Trump. We’re hoping she can tame his hair.
Now, as Ms. Greta reveals her top picks, it’s time to settle into your seats, dim the lights, and pour an adult beverage. Enjoy the show!
Best Airport Meal—Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food—London Heathrow, Terminal 5
When transferring between flights at Heathrow, we always try to stop here for a meal. In September, I ordered a tasty chicken curry with saffron rice, while Sue enjoyed the short rib burger. No time to sit and dine? Order one of the restaurant’s Plane Picnics and you can eat onboard your flight.
Most Magical Place to Watch Snowflakes—Stockholm, Sweden
We visited Stockholm in January for the Formex Home Interiors Show. Yes, Sweden in January. It was cold. It was dark by 3 pm. But, several days we had snow. It was fun to walk around the city in the snow and watch the fluffy flakes tumble from the sky.
Best Beach Location—Nice, France
For the complete opposite of Sweden in January, we went to southern France in September. If you want to take in sunny skies, blue sea, and sandy beaches go to Nice. The best viewing location—the rooftop café and bar of the Le Meridien Hotel.
Worst Experience in a Rental Car—Nice, France
Yes, Nice is nice, but don’t ever get trapped at the toll road exit. In the wrong lane. With angry French drivers behind you. The French are so sensitive. Geez!
Most Scenic Hotel Room View—St. Paul de Vence, France
Book a room at the La Grande Bastide Hotel with views of the walled town of St. Paul de Vence. You won’t be disappointed.
Most Interesting 10 Days of the Year
At the end of April, we moved from Wisconsin to Georgia. So, the entire household and EuropeanMarket moved. At once. High praise for the moving company except there is still a box of vintage Swedish puzzles missing. And a box of Wini Moranville’s cookbooks. If any of you see those along the Interstate near Nashville, please call me.
Best Exercise in Europe—Eze, France
Come to Eze and get your aerobic exercise. The village is built 15,000 feet in the sky (OK, I might be stretching the truth…just a tad) and all the streets go straight uphill. After 45 minutes of climbing around, I needed some oxygen and a glass of wine.
Prettiest Viking Princess—Stockholm, Sweden
Look closely. I think you all know that lovely golden-hair lass.
Nicest Airline Lounge—SAS Lounge, Stockholm
When an airline employee offers up a visit to the lounge, we never say no.
So, we were happy to spend some time in the beautiful SAS lounge. Food and beverages were tasty, but the Scandic interior design was pretty cool.
Best Customers, Friends, and Family
The year was one of farewells and new beginnings. But, the last award belongs to all you for your ongoing support and encouragement. As we have said in the past, without you EuropeanMarket would not exist. Thank you for allowing us and this business to be a part of your lives. Here’s to a wonderful 2016!
